Imani Park Transitional
Housing Program

60 Kilmer Avenue/Road #2
Edison, NJ
Program Director: Ms. Alice Abner

Imani Park Transitional Housing Program is a 16-unit facility that provides housing and support services specifically geared toward the needs of homeless individuals and families where one member is living with HIV/AIDS. Situated on 10 acres of federal surplus property at Camp Kilmer in Edison. Imani Park consists of one, two, and three bedroon apartments, classrooms, a community room, laundry facilities, and staff offices.

A transitional housing program that provides a full spectrum of services, as well as safe, clean apartments, is critical to persons living with HIV/AIDS, especially those who have been living on the street, in crowded shelters, or in a welfare motel. It is the role of a transitional housing program to provide a meaningful, viable alternative to this kind of life, to provide a home to a person or family facing AIDS, and to give people the compassionate support they need. By developing a transitional housing program for homeless people living with HIV/AIDS, MIPH will address the dual issues of homelessness and AIDS.

A true collaborative program, Imani Park will provide comprehensive services geared toward enabling our residents to become medically stable and to find safe, affordable housing. This will be accomlished during the resident's 18-24 month residency at Imani Park as well as with the cooperation of several key serice providers in the area to include, but not limited to: Hyacinth AIDS Foundation, Eric B. Chandler Health Clinic, VNA, Jewish Family & Vocational Services of Middlesex County, and the Ryan White sponored HIV Planning Council of Middlesex, Somerset and Hunterdon Counties. The services and classes are offered to develop or improve functioning and self-sufficiency in the following:

Building Self-Esteem Job Training
Parenting Computer Literacy
Home Management Case Management
Good Tenancy Housing and Relocation
Mental Health and
Substance Abuse Counseling
Support Groups
Health Education After-school Enrichment

The name Imani means "faith, believing in ourselves, our family unit and using our history to better plan for the future". MIPH chose this name to exemplify the meaning behind our mission, to help our clients to find the faith to meet the challenges of the present, to persevere and to succeed.
